Spending a day at the California Academy of Sciences will have visitors exploring the wonders of earth,
ocean and space. The museum complex features three separate museums with each offering its own unique
experience.
The Natural History Museum has dioramas of animals in natural surroundings, the Life Through Time exhibit -
a 3.5 billion year journey through life and the new
interactive Earthquake exhibit. Not to be missed also
is the Gary Larson ("The Far Side") room.
The Steinhart Aquarium has the most diverse aquarium collection in the world, including the Fish Roundabout
which surrounds you with schools of swimming fish, the popular penguin colony and the new Seahorse breeding
display.
Lastly, the Morrison Planetarium presents daily sky
shows and Laserium laser light shows choreographed torock or classical music on select evenings.
With eight scientific research departments, the
Academy's natural history collections are utilized by
scientists from around the world. They provide
essential tools for comparative studies in biodiversity, and are ranked among the world's
largest. As the museum's valuable collections of natural history
specimens have grown, so have the public exhibits. Educational exhibits and events bring the message of Academy
research to the public with the goal of inspiring concern over our natural environment. A variety of
classes, lectures and trips are offered for adults, children and teachers.
Parking is free and all museums are wheelchair accessible.
